How to delete your facebook advert interests.

In George Orwell's 1984, the government controlled what information the public had access to.

In today's world, the mainstream media are rapidly becoming propaganda outlets just like those found in George Orwell's 1984, with social media websites being some of the biggest culprits.

Back in May 2016 facebook were accused of censoring politically right websites. At the time facebook denied it, but after the election Mark Censorberg openly admitted to a 'new' policy of censorship.

If you value free speech, and want to fight back against companies who oppose free speech, you can take the following steps to ensure facebook get less advertising revenue.

This is a step by step on how to delete your advert interests from your facebook account.

1) Go into settings

Click on the downward-pointing arrow in the top right corner of the page, then click 'Settings'.

2) Click the 'Ads' icon

Now click the 'Ads' icon which you can find in the left hand column just below the 'Apps' icon.

3) Delete your advert interests

Delete your advert interests. You do this by clicking the small cross in the top right corner of each ad preference box.

There are several categories, so you will need to do this for each category, i.e. 'News and entertainment', 'People', 'Business and industry', etc.

In my case I found several categories which I had no interest in whatsoever. Deleting these categories gave me an added sense of satisfaction, as I was uncomfortable with the way facebook were misleading advertisers by claiming I was interested in subjects which I had no interest in.

4) Delete 'Advertisers you've interacted with'

Scroll down to the next box, which is 'Advertisers you've interacted with'. Repeat the process and delete each advertiser.

There are two categories, so you will need to do this for both 'Advertisers with your contact info' and 'Advertisers whose website or app you've used'.

5) Restrict your personal information

Facebook use your personal information to target advertisers.

Scroll down to the next box which says 'Your information'. Click each option to ensure each slider bar is greyed out. This will restrict facebook from showing you ads based on your relationship status, employer, job, etc.

There are two tabs, 'About you' and 'Your categories', so you will also need to delete the information listed under 'Your categories'.

6) Restrict your ad settings

Finally, scroll down to the 'Ad settings' box.

Restrict facebook from showing you ads based on your internet use by setting the options to 'No', 'No' and 'No One', as shown below:

When you delete your advert preferences, facebook tell you that you will still see adverts. This is true, but in my experience the number of adverts in my feed was greatly reduced. Advertisers can choose to show adverts to facebook users who 'like' certain interests. If less people like an interest, less adverts get shown and facebook get less advertising revenue.

One final note, facebook continually add subjects to your 'advert preferences' so you may wish to repeat this process every few weeks to ensure your ad preferences remain empty.
